Vibrio cholerae O1 (live attenuated) refers to genetically modified strains of V. cholerae O1 that are used as oral vaccines against cholera. These strains are engineered to reduce or eliminate virulence factors, primarily by deleting the gene encoding cholera toxin, while retaining the ability to colonize the gut and stimulate a protective immune response. The goal is to provide immunity without causing severe disease. The immune response involves the production of vibriocidal antibodies and other immune factors that protect against subsequent infection by wild-type V. cholerae O1.
