Overview

Villin-1 in Pomacea canaliculata is an actin-binding protein belonging to the gelsolin superfamily, primarily involved in the organization and maintenance of the microvilli in the intestinal brush border (UniProt, 2024). It functions by bundling, capping, and severing actin filaments in a calcium-dependent manner, which is crucial for the structural integrity and absorptive capacity of the snail's digestive tract (PubMed, 29539642). While villin is a well-characterized protein in vertebrates, its specific role in the golden apple snail—a notorious invasive species and agricultural pest—is studied primarily in the context of snail physiology and its ability to host human parasites like Angiostrongylus cantonensis (NCBI, 2023). There are currently no known therapeutic drugs targeting Pomacea canaliculata villin for human use, nor is it a standard target for molluscicides, which typically target metabolic or neurological pathways. In human medicine, villin-1 is used as a diagnostic biomarker for neuroendocrine tumors and colorectal carcinomas, but the snail ortholog is not utilized in clinical practice (StatPearls, 2023). Research into this specific protein is limited compared to its mammalian counterparts, focusing mainly on its structural contribution to the snail's gut (PubMed, 29539642). Consequently, it does not currently serve as a target for drug development or therapeutic intervention.
