Overview

Viral envelope lipids, viral proteins, and nucleic acids represent the fundamental structural and genetic building blocks of a virus. The viral envelope is a host-derived lipid bilayer containing viral glycoproteins that mediate host cell recognition and entry (McDonnell & Russell, 1999). Viral proteins serve structural roles in the capsid or enzymatic roles in the viral life cycle, while nucleic acids (DNA or RNA) store the genetic information required for replication. Targeting these components collectively is a strategy employed by broad-spectrum virucidal agents, such as povidone-iodine and various alcohols (Bigliardi et al., 2017). These agents work by denaturing proteins, disrupting the integrity of the lipid envelope, and causing oxidative damage to the viral genome (CDC, 2008). While highly effective for surface disinfection and topical antisepsis, the lack of molecular specificity typically limits these interventions to non-systemic applications to avoid host cell damage. Consequently, these targets are primary focuses for infection control and the prevention of viral transmission.
