Volatile sulfur compound-producing bacteria refer to a diverse group of predominantly Gram-negative anaerobic microorganisms found within the oral cavity (PMID: 24554099). These bacteria are primarily located on the posterior tongue dorsum and within periodontal pockets (PMID: 16513092). Key species include Porphyromonas gingivalis, Prevotella intermedia, and Fusobacterium nucleatum. They utilize proteolytic enzymes to degrade sulfur-containing amino acids, such as cysteine and methionine, into malodorous gases (PMID: 15127864). These gases, known as volatile sulfur compounds (VSCs), include hydrogen sulfide and methyl mercaptan, which are the primary cause of halitosis. Beyond causing odor, VSCs can be toxic to oral tissues and may contribute to the progression of periodontitis (PMID: 12617601). Therapeutic strategies involve the use of antimicrobial agents like chlorhexidine to reduce the bacterial population (StatPearls: Chlorhexidine). Additionally, metal ions such as zinc are used to chemically neutralize the VSCs produced by these bacteria by forming insoluble sulfides (PMID: 15127864). Maintaining a balance in the oral microbiome is essential, as over-suppression can lead to dysbiosis or opportunistic infections like oral candidiasis.
Antimicrobial agents reduce the population of VSC-producing bacteria through cell membrane disruption or metabolic inhibition, while metal ions like zinc chemically neutralize volatile sulfur compounds by forming non-volatile metal sulfides (PMID: 15127864, StatPearls).
