Overview

High-voltage-activated (HVA) calcium channels are a class of voltage-gated ion channels that open in response to strong depolarizations of the cell membrane. Their activation allows the influx of Ca²⁺ ions, which serve as critical second messengers for numerous physiological processes, including muscle contraction, neurotransmitter and hormone secretion, gene transcription, and synaptic transmission. The HVA calcium channel family includes several subtypes distinguished by their biophysical properties and pharmacological sensitivities: L-type (Cav1.1–Cav1.4), P/Q-type (Cav2.1), N-type (Cav2.2), R-type (Cav2.3). Each subtype has specialized roles depending on tissue distribution.
