The voltage-gated sodium channel protein in arthropods is a large transmembrane ion channel essential for initiating and propagating action potentials in nervous tissue. It consists of a principal alpha subunit, structurally organized into four homologous domains (I–IV), each containing six transmembrane segments (S1–S6), and is often associated with modulatory beta subunits. The alpha subunit forms the channel pore and the voltage-sensing machinery, enabling rapid sodium influx upon membrane depolarization. In insects and other arthropods, this channel is the primary molecular target of several classes of insecticides, especially pyrethroids and DDT. Resistance frequently arises through specific mutations—most notably in the alpha subunit—leading to decreased sensitivity to these compounds. The gene is highly conserved across insect orders, reflecting critical physiological roles. The channel is not directly implicated in human disease but plays a central part in pest and vector control strategies, where resistance to targeting agents poses significant challenges for agriculture and public health
