Vomeronasal 2 receptor 3, pseudogene (VN2R3P), is a unitary pseudogene in humans—meaning it is a non-functional remnant of a gene that once encoded a vomeronasal 2 receptor protein, part of a family of G protein-coupled receptors involved in pheromone detection in vertebrates[1][3][5]. In humans, this gene does not produce a functional protein and thus is not a receptor, drug target, or biomarker. Its classification as a pseudogene means it plays no known biological function in humans and is not implicated in disease or therapy[3][5]. The functional V2R proteins in other species are involved in the detection of water-soluble pheromones and use G protein-coupled mechanisms in sensory neurons, but VN2R3P lacks this capacity in humans[7].
