Wilms' tumor gene 1 protein (WT1) is a zinc finger transcription factor crucial for kidney and gonad development during embryogenesis. It regulates genes involved in cell growth, differentiation, and apoptosis. WT1 acts as both a tumor suppressor and an oncogene, depending on the cellular context, and is implicated in various diseases, including Wilms' tumor, Denys–Drash syndrome, WAGR syndrome, and leukemia.
