X-ray attenuation refers to the reduction in intensity of an x-ray beam as it passes through matter. Iodine, a high atomic number element (Z=53), is used as a contrast agent to enhance the visibility of internal structures in medical imaging techniques like CT and fluoroscopy. Its effectiveness stems from the photoelectric effect, particularly around its K-edge absorption energy (~33 keV), where it strongly absorbs x-ray photons. This increased attenuation allows for better differentiation between iodine-containing regions (e.g., blood vessels) and surrounding soft tissues. While iodine provides valuable diagnostic information, its use can be associated with certain safety concerns, including hypersensitivity reactions and nephrotoxicity.
