StarGene (Shanghai Ruixing Gene Technology) was a biotechnology company based in Shanghai, China, specializing in functional genomics and drug discovery. Founded in 2001, it was acquired by the U.S.-based biopharmaceutical company Exelixis in 2002 to serve as its primary R&D center in China. The facility focused on identifying and validating novel drug targets for cancer and metabolic diseases using high-throughput genomic technologies and model organism genetics. At its peak, the company employed approximately 100 scientists and collaborated with local institutions like Fudan University. In 2010, Exelixis ceased operations at the Shanghai site as part of a strategic restructuring to prioritize its late-stage clinical programs, such as cabozantinib. The company is now considered inactive following its deregistration.
