Company intelligence / Profile preview
The Medicines Patent Pool (MPP) is a United Nations-backed public health organization dedicated to increasing access to life-saving medicines in low- and middle-income countries. By negotiating voluntary licenses with patent holders, MPP enables the production of affordable generic versions of essential treatments for diseases such as HIV, Hepatitis C, and COVID-19. In 2022, the organization facilitated a landmark agreement with Pfizer for the oral antiviral nirmatrelvir, involving 35 generic manufacturers globally, including 19 in India and others in China and South Africa. The organization plays a critical role in the global health ecosystem by bridging the gap between pharmaceutical innovation and equitable drug distribution. Through its technology transfer initiatives, MPP also supports the local manufacturing of biologics and vaccines in underserved regions.
