Overview
22nd Century Group developed the first FDA-authorized Modified Risk Tobacco Product (MRTP) combustible cigarette—VLN®—with ~95% less nicotine than conventional cigarettes. Clinical studies show VLN® can help reduce daily cigarette consumption by over a third. The company’s proprietary plant biotechnology platform enables precise control of nicotine levels in tobacco and has been validated through regulatory approval and commercial launch across thousands of retail locations.[1][2][8] Hemp/cannabis R&D was discontinued after divestiture of GVB Biopharma subsidiary in December 2023.[10]
