A.L. Industrier

A.L. Industrier, originally founded in 1903 as Apothekernes Laboratorium, is a historic Norwegian pharmaceutical company that became a global leader in antibiotic production. The company is most famous for its development and large-scale manufacture of bacitracin, an antibiotic used in both human and animal health. In 1994, A.L. Industrier reorganized its international operations into Alpharma, which grew to be a major player on the New York Stock Exchange. Following the acquisition of Alpharma by King Pharmaceuticals in 2008 for approximately $1.6 billion, A.L. Industrier transitioned into a private investment and holding company. The company's legacy continues through several spin-offs and successor entities, including Xellia Pharmaceuticals and the animal health giant Zoetis. Based in Oslo, A.L. Industrier remains a significant name in the history of Nordic life sciences and industrial biotechnology.
