Company intelligence / Profile preview
Abbey Pharmaceuticals was a specialty biotechnology company focused on the development of innovative therapies for respiratory diseases, specifically respiratory syncytial virus (RSV). Founded by a team of former MedImmune executives, the company's primary focus was advancing a next-generation monoclonal antibody designed to prevent RSV infections in high-risk infants. This lead candidate was intended to build upon the clinical and commercial success of palivizumab (Synagis) by offering improved potency and dosing profiles. In April 2011, Abbey Pharmaceuticals was acquired by MedImmune, the global biologics division of AstraZeneca, to bolster its infectious disease pipeline. Following the acquisition, Abbey's assets and expertise were integrated into AstraZeneca's broader respiratory and biologics research and development programs.
