Advanced Technology of Kentucky

Aptamera, originally founded as Advanced Technology of Kentucky, was a biopharmaceutical company specializing in the development of aptamer-based therapeutics for oncology. The company's core technology centered on G-rich oligonucleotides that bind to nucleolin, a protein overexpressed on the surface of many cancer cells. Its lead product candidate, AS1411 (formerly AGRO100), was the first aptamer to reach clinical trials for cancer treatment. The drug demonstrated potential in Phase 1 and Phase 2 studies for indications such as renal cell carcinoma and acute myeloid leukemia. The company was established based on pioneering research from the University of Louisville. In 2005, Aptamera was acquired by the British biotechnology firm Antisoma to bolster its pipeline of targeted cancer therapies.
