Advanced Vision Research

Advanced Vision Research (AVR) was a pharmaceutical company dedicated to the development and marketing of products for ocular surface health, most notably the TheraTears brand. Founded by ophthalmologist Dr. Jeffrey Gilbard, the company specialized in treatments for dry eye syndrome and blepharitis using electrolyte-balanced formulas designed to replicate natural tears. Its commercial portfolio included lubricant eye drops, eyelid cleansers, and nutritional supplements. In 2011, the company was acquired by Akorn for approximately $26 million to bolster its consumer health division. The flagship TheraTears brand was subsequently sold to Prestige Consumer Healthcare in 2021 following Akorn's restructuring.
