Afraxis Holdings

Afraxis was a San Diego-based biotechnology company dedicated to developing novel treatments for central nervous system disorders. The company utilized its proprietary Enhanced Spine Profiling (ESP) platform to identify compounds that could restore normal dendritic spine morphology and synaptic function. Its lead research program focused on the development of small molecule inhibitors of p21-activated kinase (PAK), a protein family crucial for regulating the neuronal cytoskeleton. These inhibitors were primarily investigated for their potential to treat Fragile X syndrome, autism spectrum disorders, and other cognitive impairments. In 2013, Afraxis was acquired by Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, in a deal valued at up to $187.5 million. The acquisition was driven by Genentech's interest in the company's PAK inhibitor assets and its innovative approach to neurobiology.
