African Malaria Network Trust

The African Malaria Network Trust (AMANET) was a pan-African non-profit organization headquartered in Tanzania that played a central role in malaria vaccine research and development. Established in 2002 as a successor to the African Malaria Vaccine Testing Network, the Trust focused on building African capacity to conduct high-quality, ethically sound clinical trials. AMANET provided essential services including Good Clinical Practice (GCP) training, ethical review support, and infrastructure development for research sites across the continent. The organization was a key facilitator for multi-center clinical trials for major vaccine candidates, most notably the RTS,S/AS01 malaria vaccine. By coordinating efforts between international sponsors and African researchers, AMANET ensured that clinical evaluations of malaria interventions were led by local scientists to address regional health priorities. Although it is no longer actively managing new programs, its contributions were foundational to the successful development of the first WHO-approved malaria vaccine.
