AIRCOAT is a technology-focused entity (originally established as a major EU Horizon 2020 research project) that develops biomimetic surface coatings designed to reduce friction and prevent biofouling. The technology is inspired by the Salvinia effect, which allows certain aquatic plants to trap a permanent layer of air when submerged, creating a barrier between the surface and the surrounding liquid. While its primary commercial application is in the maritime industry to reduce ship fuel consumption and emissions, the technology has significant life science applications in preventing bacterial adhesion and biofilm formation on medical implants and surgical tools. The project involves a consortium of high-tech SMEs and research institutions focused on translating this biological principle into industrial and medical surface solutions.
