AkaRx is a biopharmaceutical company that specialized in the development of small molecule therapeutics for hematological disorders. The company's primary contribution to the field is the development of avatrombopag (Doptelet), a second-generation, orally active thrombopoietin receptor agonist. Avatrombopag was designed to treat thrombocytopenia by stimulating the production of platelets through a mechanism similar to natural thrombopoietin. In 2010, AkaRx was acquired by the Japanese pharmaceutical giant Eisai for $255 million to strengthen its oncology supportive care pipeline. Following the acquisition, the lead product successfully navigated clinical trials and received FDA approval for multiple indications, including thrombocytopenia in patients with chronic liver disease.
