Company intelligence / Profile preview
Akorion was an early-stage biotechnology company focused on developing precision medicines for kidney diseases by targeting podocyte biology. Founded by Dr. Peter Mundel and backed by Third Rock Ventures, the company specialized in the regulation of the actin cytoskeleton and its role in maintaining the kidney's filtration barrier. Akorion's research led to the identification of TRPC5 as a critical therapeutic target for proteinuric kidney diseases like FSGS. The company's assets and scientific team were eventually integrated into Goldfinch Bio, which advanced the pipeline into clinical trials. Following the dissolution of Goldfinch Bio in 2023, the lead programs originated at Akorion were acquired by Ironwood Pharmaceuticals.
