Akorn was a specialty pharmaceutical company that developed, manufactured, and marketed generic and branded prescription pharmaceuticals, as well as animal health and over-the-counter products. The company specialized in difficult-to-manufacture sterile dosage forms, including ophthalmics, injectables, and inhalants, alongside non-sterile topicals and oral liquids. In February 2023, Akorn filed for Chapter 7 bankruptcy and abruptly ceased all US operations, terminating its entire workforce and closing its manufacturing facilities. Prior to its liquidation, it was a significant player in the generic ophthalmic and injectable markets.
