Akubio

Akubio was a biotechnology company based in Cambridge, UK, that developed label-free biosensor systems for the life sciences research and diagnostic markets. The company's proprietary Resonant Acoustic Profiling (RAP) technology utilized acoustic waves to monitor molecular interactions in real-time, providing kinetic and affinity data without the need for fluorescent or radioactive labels. This technology was primarily embodied in the RAPid 4 system, which was used for applications such as protein characterization, antibody screening, and drug discovery. Akubio's platform offered a robust alternative to surface plasmon resonance (SPR) by being less sensitive to sample turbidity and refractive index changes. In 2008, the company was acquired by Inverness Medical Innovations (now part of Abbott) to bolster its portfolio of rapid diagnostic technologies.
