Company intelligence / Profile preview
Albany Venture Managers (AVM) was a venture capital firm based in Edinburgh, Scotland, that specialized in early-stage investments within the life sciences, healthcare, and technology sectors. Spun out of HBOS (British Linen Bank) in 2000, the firm became a significant player in the UK biotechnology investment landscape, managing several venture capital trusts and funds, including the Albany Venture Trust. In 2006, AVM was acquired by Alliance Trust PLC to form the foundation of its private equity arm, Alliance Trust Equity Partners (ATEP). The firm's portfolio included notable life science companies such as Domantis (acquired by GSK), Xention Discovery, and Pharmagene. Following a strategic reorganization at Alliance Trust in the early 2010s, the private equity and venture capital operations were wound down, and the entity was eventually dissolved.
