Alberta First Nations Information Governance Centre

The Alberta First Nations Information Governance Centre (AFNIGC) is a non-profit organization dedicated to data sovereignty and the implementation of OCAP® principles (Ownership, Control, Access, and Possession) for First Nations in Alberta. The centre serves as a technical authority for the collection, protection, and use of First Nations data, particularly in the sectors of health, education, and socio-economic development. AFNIGC facilitates major national research initiatives at the regional level, such as the First Nations Regional Health Survey (RHS) and the First Nations Regional Early Childhood, Education, and Employment Survey (REEES). By providing high-quality, community-controlled data, the organization empowers First Nations leadership to make evidence-based decisions and advocate for improved health outcomes. The centre also provides training and support to communities to build local capacity in information management and research ethics.
