All-Union Research Institute of Vitamins

The All-Union Research Institute of Vitamins (VNIVI) was the central Soviet scientific institution responsible for the research, development, and industrial implementation of vitamin production. Founded in 1933 and based in Moscow, the institute pioneered the chemical synthesis of essential vitamins including Vitamin A, B-complex, C, D, and E, significantly reducing the USSR's reliance on foreign imports. VNIVI's work spanned from basic biochemical research to the design of large-scale manufacturing processes and the formulation of clinical guidelines for vitamin therapy. The institute played a critical role during World War II by developing vitamin concentrates to prevent deficiency diseases among soldiers and civilians. Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union, it transitioned into the Scientific Research Institute of Vitamins (NII Vitaminov) before its eventual liquidation in 2017.
