Alpha Beta Technology

Alpha Beta Technology was a biopharmaceutical company that specialized in the development of carbohydrate-based immunotherapeutics. The company's core technology centered on PGG-glucan, a proprietary yeast-derived polysaccharide designed to stimulate white blood cells to combat infections. Its lead product candidate, Betafectin, was evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials for the prevention of serious post-operative infections in high-risk surgical patients. Despite significant early promise and a partnership with Pharmacia & Upjohn, the company faced clinical setbacks and financial instability. Alpha Beta Technology filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy in 1999, and its intellectual property and assets were eventually acquired by Biopolymer Engineering.
