Alpharma was a global specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the development, manufacture, and marketing of human and animal health products. The company's United States Pharmaceutical Division (USPD) was a leader in the generic liquid and topical pharmaceutical market and also marketed specialty brand-name products. Its most notable products included Kadian, an extended-release morphine sulfate for chronic pain, and the Flector Patch, a topical NSAID for acute pain. Alpharma was acquired by King Pharmaceuticals in 2008 for approximately $3.6 billion, and King was subsequently acquired by Pfizer in 2011.
