Alra Laboratories was a generic pharmaceutical manufacturer based in Gurnee, Illinois, that operated during the 1980s and early 1990s. The company specialized in producing generic versions of established prescription drugs, most notably the laxative Cholac (lactulose) and the antibiotic erythromycin. Alra Laboratories became a central figure in a major pharmaceutical scandal involving extensive regulatory violations, including the falsification of stability data and manufacturing records. These actions led to a permanent injunction by the FDA and the criminal conviction of its founder for racketeering and fraud. The company is currently inactive and no longer manufactures or distributes healthcare products.
