Company intelligence / Profile preview
Altana Research Institute (ARI) was the North American drug discovery hub for Altana Pharma, the pharmaceutical division of the German specialty chemicals group ALTANA AG. Based in Waltham, Massachusetts, the institute specialized in identifying and validating novel therapeutic targets through advanced functional genomics, proteomics, and bioinformatics. ARI's research efforts were primarily focused on respiratory and gastrointestinal diseases, supporting the development of key pharmaceutical assets such as roflumilast. In 2007, the institute was included in the €4.5 billion sale of Altana Pharma to the Danish company Nycomed. Following subsequent acquisitions, the legacy of ARI's research was eventually integrated into Takeda Pharmaceutical Company.
