Alternative Behavioral Services (ABS) is a healthcare services organization specializing in managed behavioral health and inpatient psychiatric care, primarily serving children, adolescents, and their families. Founded in 1986 and headquartered in Portsmouth, Virginia, the company operates a network of psychiatric hospitals, residential treatment centers, and outpatient programs across several states. ABS was a subsidiary of FHC Health Systems until its acquisition by Psychiatric Solutions, Inc. (PSI) in 2006 for approximately $210 million. Following the acquisition of PSI by Universal Health Services (UHS) in 2010, ABS became a wholly-owned subsidiary of UHS, one of the largest hospital management companies in the United States. The company continues to provide comprehensive mental health services, including therapeutic foster care, alternative schools, and specialized treatment for aggressive or violent youth.
