Alterra Healthcare Corporation was a leading American provider of assisted living and specialized senior housing services, particularly recognized for its pioneering work in memory care. Founded in 1981 as Alternative Living Services, the company was instrumental in developing the assisted living model as a residential alternative to traditional nursing homes. Alterra was well-known for its 'Clare Bridge' programs, which offered specialized environments and care protocols for residents with Alzheimer's and other forms of dementia. Following a period of rapid expansion and subsequent financial restructuring in the early 2000s, the company was acquired by Brookdale Senior Living in 2005. This merger significantly consolidated the senior care industry, making Brookdale one of the largest operators in the United States.
