Alzeim

Alzeim Limited was a Welsh biotechnology company that pioneered the extraction of galantamine, a key pharmaceutical for treating Alzheimer's disease, from daffodils. The company discovered that daffodils grown at high altitudes in the Black Mountains of Wales produced significantly higher concentrations of galantamine due to environmental stress, a phenomenon they termed the "Black Mountains effect." Alzeim developed proprietary agricultural and chemical extraction technologies to produce high-purity, plant-derived galantamine as a more sustainable and cost-effective alternative to synthetic versions. Although the company entered liquidation in the early 2010s, its innovative work in "agroceuticals" laid the groundwork for subsequent efforts to establish a domestic supply of dementia treatments in the United Kingdom.
