AM2PAT Inc. was a North Carolina-based manufacturer of pre-filled heparin and saline syringes that became the center of a major public health crisis in 2007 and 2008. The company's products were found to be contaminated with Serratia marcescens bacteria due to severe manufacturing violations and a lack of proper sterility testing. This contamination resulted in at least five deaths and over 300 infections across multiple states, leading to a massive nationwide recall. Following a federal investigation, the company was shut down, and its manufacturing facility in Angier, North Carolina, was closed. Several top executives were sentenced to prison for fraud and distributing adulterated medical products, while the CEO, Dushyant Patel, fled the country to avoid prosecution.
