AmCyte was a biotechnology company dedicated to developing a cell-based treatment for insulin-dependent diabetes through advanced encapsulation technology. The company's platform utilized a proprietary poly-L-lysine and alginate-based coating to protect transplanted islet cells from the host's immune system while allowing for the diffusion of nutrients and insulin. This approach aimed to enable islet transplantation without the requirement for lifelong immunosuppressive therapy. In 2004, AmCyte participated in a three-way merger with CyThera and Novocell, forming a leading regenerative medicine firm that eventually became ViaCyte. The legacy of AmCyte's technology continues within Vertex Pharmaceuticals following its acquisition of ViaCyte in 2022.
