American MedCenters

American MedCenters was a Minneapolis-based health maintenance organization (HMO) management company that operated during the mid-1980s. Founded in 1984, the company quickly grew and went public in 1985 under the ticker AAMD on the NASDAQ. It was led by Dr. Glen D. Nelson, a prominent surgeon and healthcare innovator who also served as the CEO of Park Nicollet Medical Center. The company specialized in managing HMO plans and providing managed care services in the Midwest. In 1986, American MedCenters was acquired for approximately $41 million by Partners National Health Plans, a joint venture between Aetna and Voluntary Hospitals of America (VHA). Following the acquisition, its operations were integrated into the Aetna healthcare network, eventually operating under the name Aetna Health Benefits.
