American Medical International

American Medical International (AMI) was a pioneering for-profit hospital management company that played a significant role in the consolidation of the American healthcare industry. Founded in 1960, the company grew to operate a vast network of acute-care hospitals and healthcare facilities across the United States and in several international markets, including the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. AMI was notable for being one of the first healthcare companies to be listed on the New York Stock Exchange and for its aggressive expansion strategies during the 1970s and 1980s. Following a leveraged buyout in 1989, the company was eventually acquired in 1995 by National Medical Enterprises, which subsequently rebranded as Tenet Healthcare. The merger created one of the largest healthcare provider networks in the United States at the time.
