AmeriCan Medical Plan of South Carolina was a health maintenance organization (HMO) that specialized in providing Medicaid managed care services. The company was a subsidiary of the Florida-based AmeriCan Medical Plan, Inc., founded by healthcare entrepreneur Miguel "Mike" Fernandez. It focused on managing healthcare delivery and insurance benefits for government-sponsored populations within the state of South Carolina. In 1994, the company was acquired by Foundation Health Corporation for approximately $40 million as part of a strategic expansion into the Southeastern United States. Following a series of industry consolidations, its legacy operations were eventually integrated into Health Net and subsequently Centene Corporation.
