American Standard Companies Inc. was a global diversified manufacturer that operated in three primary segments: air conditioning systems (Trane), vehicle control systems (WABCO), and bathroom and kitchen products. Within the healthcare and life sciences sector, the company was a significant provider of medical-grade plumbing fixtures, antimicrobial surfaces, and safety-oriented bathroom solutions designed for hospitals and elderly care facilities. The company is also recognized for its global health contributions, specifically the development of the SATO sanitation system in partnership with the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation to improve hygiene in developing regions. In 2007, the conglomerate was dissolved and separated into three independent entities: Trane, WABCO, and American Standard Brands (now part of LIXIL).
