Amylin Pharmaceuticals was a pioneering biopharmaceutical company that played a transformative role in the treatment of metabolic diseases, particularly type 2 diabetes. The company is best known for developing and commercializing the first-in-class GLP-1 receptor agonist, Byetta (exenatide), and its once-weekly successor, Bydureon, in a long-standing collaboration with Eli Lilly. Amylin also brought Symlin (pramlintide acetate) to market as a first-in-class amylin analog for patients using insulin. In 2012, the company was acquired by Bristol Myers Squibb for approximately $7 billion, and its diabetes portfolio was subsequently integrated into AstraZeneca's global metabolic franchise.
