Anawah, Inc. was a Seattle-based agricultural biotechnology company that specialized in advanced plant breeding and functional genomics. Founded in 2000 as a spinout from the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, the company utilized its proprietary TILLING (Targeting Induced Local Lesions In Genomes) technology to identify and exploit natural genetic variation in crops. This approach allowed for the development of improved plant varieties with enhanced nutritional profiles and longer shelf-lives without the use of genetic engineering (non-GMO). Anawah's research programs targeted high-value whole foods such as tomatoes, lettuce, and wheat, aiming to provide consumers with more nutritious and better-tasting produce. The company was acquired by Arcadia Biosciences in 2005 to integrate its non-GMO breeding platform into Arcadia's broader agricultural portfolio.
