Ancilla Health Systems

Ancilla Health Systems was a prominent Catholic healthcare organization sponsored by the Poor Handmaids of Jesus Christ, primarily serving communities in Northern Indiana and Illinois. The system operated a network of acute care hospitals and healthcare facilities, including St. Mary Medical Center in Hobart and St. Catherine Hospital in East Chicago. During the late 1990s and early 2000s, the organization faced significant financial challenges that led to the strategic divestiture of its primary assets. Most of its hospitals were eventually acquired by larger regional providers, such as the Community Healthcare System and Trinity Health, effectively dissolving the independent system.
