Andrx Corporation was a specialty pharmaceutical company that primarily developed and commercialized generic versions of controlled-release brand-name drugs. The company was a pioneer in utilizing proprietary drug delivery technologies to create bioequivalent versions of complex pharmaceuticals, particularly in the cardiovascular and metabolic therapeutic areas. Andrx was well-known for its aggressive legal and regulatory strategies regarding Abbreviated New Drug Applications (ANDAs) and securing 180-day Hatch-Waxman exclusivity. In 2006, the company was acquired by Watson Pharmaceuticals for approximately $1.9 billion, which significantly bolstered Watson's position in the generic market. Following subsequent industry consolidations, the legacy Andrx generic assets eventually became part of Teva Pharmaceutical Industries.
