AplaGen

AplaGen was a German biotechnology company specializing in the development of synthetic protein therapeutics through its proprietary Hybrid-Solid-Phase-Synthesis (H-S-S) technology. This platform allowed for the chemical synthesis of large, complex proteins, bypassing the limitations of traditional recombinant DNA production methods. The company's lead candidate, AG-0018, was a synthetic erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) developed for the treatment of anemia associated with chronic kidney disease and oncology. AG-0018 demonstrated the potential for a superior safety profile and simplified manufacturing compared to biological EPO products. Despite reaching Phase 2 clinical development, AplaGen ceased operations following insolvency in 2012. The company was headquartered in Baesweiler and supported by a consortium of European venture capital investors.
