Applied Immune Sciences (AIS) was a pioneer in the field of ex vivo cell therapy and gene therapy during the late 1980s and early 1990s. The company developed proprietary technology for the selection, activation, and expansion of specific immune cell populations, such as T-lymphocytes, using its AIS CellCollector devices. Its primary clinical focus included treating HIV/AIDS through the infusion of expanded CD8+ cells and addressing various cancers and bone marrow transplant complications. AIS was eventually acquired by Rhone-Poulenc Rorer in 1995, becoming a foundational part of their Gencell division.
