Applied Microbiology

Applied Microbiology Inc. (AMBI) was a pioneering biotechnology company founded in 1983, focused on the development of antimicrobial technologies derived from bacteriocins, most notably Nisin. The company developed the Ambicin platform to treat bacterial infections in both human and animal health, including bovine mastitis and skin infections, by targeting Lipid II to disrupt bacterial cell walls. In the mid-1990s, the company shifted its strategic focus toward nutritional ingredients and acquired a significant patent portfolio for chromium picolinate, leading to a name change to Nutrition 21 in 1997. Today, its legacy continues through Nutrition 21's focus on clinically substantiated ingredients for metabolic health and glucose management. Nutrition 21 was eventually acquired by Everwell Health Solutions in 2021, where it continues to operate as a subsidiary.
