Ardent Pharmaceuticals was a biopharmaceutical company based in Durham, North Carolina, specializing in the discovery and development of novel therapeutics for pain management. The company focused on small molecule agonists of the delta-opioid receptor, aiming to provide effective analgesia without the respiratory depression and addiction potential associated with traditional mu-opioid agonists. Originally founded as Delta Pharmaceuticals, the firm was a leader in delta-opioid research, leveraging the expertise of its founder, Dr. Kwen-Jen Chang. In 2005, Ardent was acquired by Adolor Corporation for approximately $34 million to expand Adolor's portfolio of pain treatments. Following the acquisition, its lead candidates, ADL5859 and ADL5747, advanced into Phase 2 clinical trials for various chronic pain indications.
