Arriva Pharmaceuticals was a biotechnology company headquartered in Alameda, California, dedicated to developing recombinant protease inhibitors for the treatment of respiratory and inflammatory diseases. Founded in 1997, the company primarily focused on its lead candidate, recombinant alpha-1 antitrypsin (rAAT), an inhaled protein replacement therapy for hereditary emphysema and alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency. The program advanced into Phase 2b clinical trials and was supported by over $80 million in venture capital from firms like MPM Capital and Nordic Biotech. Arriva's technology utilized a yeast-based expression system to produce human proteins, aiming to provide a safer and more scalable alternative to plasma-derived therapies. Despite its clinical progress, the company ceased operations in the late 2000s and is currently considered out of business.
