Company intelligence / Profile preview
ASTA Medica Oncology was the specialized oncology division of the German pharmaceutical group ASTA Medica AG, a subsidiary of Degussa-Hüls. The company was a major player in the development and commercialization of cytotoxic agents and supportive care therapies, maintaining a portfolio of well-established products such as ifosfamide and mesna. In August 2001, Baxter International acquired the oncology business for approximately $470 million to significantly expand its global presence in the oncology and medication delivery markets. While the commercial oncology assets moved to Baxter, the research-heavy portion of the business, Zentaris, was spun off and eventually merged with AEterna Laboratories. The company's legacy is defined by its foundational contributions to chemotherapy and uroprotection in cancer treatment.
