Company intelligence / Profile preview
Astra Merck was a prominent pharmaceutical joint venture established in 1992 between the Swedish company Astra AB and the American firm Merck & Co. The company was primarily created to manage the development and commercialization of Astra's product portfolio in the United States, most notably the blockbuster proton pump inhibitor Prilosec. Headquartered in Wayne, Pennsylvania, Astra Merck was recognized for its innovative, decentralized organizational structure and customer-focused sales model. The venture played a critical role in establishing a dominant market presence for gastrointestinal and cardiovascular therapies throughout the 1990s. Following the 1999 merger of Astra and Zeneca, the joint venture was restructured, and its operations were fully integrated into the newly formed AstraZeneca.
